Indoor Drumline is a musical and marching activity that rehearses, performs, and competes outside of the regular marching band and football season. Indoor Drumline utilizes battery percussion, front ensemble musicians, props, costumes, and drill to deliver a unique musical and visual experience.
The USC indoor drumline will perform less often than the marching band, but there will still be music and visuals to be learned at rehearsals. Therefore, it is important that you commit to attending as many rehearsals as you reasonably can. Currently, we are envisioning 2 rehearsals per week, and 3-4 performances in February and March. Rehearsal schedules will be established closer to the beginning of the season. Performances will be on Saturdays. The Indoor Drumline may also be asked to perform for school events.
This indoor drumline competes in our circuit and is considered extremely good.
This high school drumline is one of the few to ever receive a perfect score (100 points) from a judge in a WGI competition.
Students who excel can find places in independent ensembles like Monarch Percussion.
As you can see in the above videos, a show involves 5-8 minutes of percussion music, electronics, marching, and visuals. The music is usually up-tempo and offers students the ability to develop rhythmic accuracy, rudimental fluency, and ensemble chemistry. As in marching band, groups are permitted a set amount of time to set up and tear down.
You may also have noticed that while performances take place in a gym, generally on a basketball court, indoor groups employ their own tarp-style floors, so the marching drill is more about dressing to the musicians around you-- a uniquely indoor experience.
Anyone can play! We are willing to teach beginners up to advanced percussionists. The more performers we have, the better. If you are a drummer that has never participated in marching band or even a wind player with a sense of rhythm looking for a marching activity to do during the winter, consider joining our group!
We are currently looking for students to play the following instruments:
Marching: snare drum, bass drum, tenor drums, cymbals.
Pit: marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel, synthesizer, rack percussion, drumset.
Fill out the interest form on the following page. You will receive an email from Mr. Reis, USC Percussion Coordinator, with further information.
Students will be asked to attend a clinic to determine best fits for instruments and to assess musical ability and needs throughout the season.
