Resources for USC students, faculty, and staff

Mental Health Matters

Learn about the USC resources and programs for our students, faculty and university staff, and our health care workers in the sections below.

Whether you choose to learn more; advocate for mental health awareness; or take the day to re-charge and rest; we hope this serves as a reminder of how important your mental health is.

Your mental health matters because you matter.

Respecting students' cultural contexts

Navigating spaces as BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identified individuals has never been easy and continues to be challenging. Student Health is committed to working with our students to create inclusive and trauma-informed mental health services to support you.

A framework for understanding mental health in college

What does it mean to be “doing well” in college? Well-being is more than physical health. Finding ways to overcome challenges, cope with new situations and environments, and manage stressors are a part of growing in our personal and professional journeys. The college experience can be everything from overwhelming to isolating, at different times.

The self-paced module, “Mental Well-being for Students” (available by logging in through TrojanLearn) was developed in partnership with the Jed Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to protecting emotional health and preventing suicide for our nation’s teens and young adults.

Mental Health in Journalism

An online toolkit for student and professional journalists, the Student Journalism Wellness Project was created by USC Daily Trojan students to promote a discussion of mental health in the profession. You’ll find student testimonies, advice and insight from psychologists and other experts, as well as a list of resources and readings for coping with the emotional and mental toll journalists experience in their careers.

Supporting Emotional Well-being for Health Care Workers

At Keck Medicine of USC, taking care of the emotional and mental health of our employees is of paramount importance. Caring for our caregivers is directly linked to our ability to deliver quality, innovative and compassionate care to our patients. The stressors of the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic highlighted the critical need to establish and sustain comprehensive services that support the overall health and well-being of our caregivers, so they can deliver exceptional medicine at every stage of the patient care journey, while thriving personally. Care for the Caregiver (C4C) is a comprehensive program, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences in the Keck School of Medicine, designed to ease potential work environment stress for our dedicated health care staff. Programs for employees and faculty include emotional well-being support through an emotional support hotline, peer support, Schwartz Rounds, support groups, and workshops as well as wellness activities that include financial assistance and massages. For more information on C4C, please send an email to CareForTheCaregiver@med.usc.edu.

Unplugging and Mindfulness

Mindfulness supports many attitudes that contribute to a satisfied life. Being mindful can make it easier to savor pleasures in life, help us fully engage in activities, improve sleep and health, and increase our ability to deal with stressful events. Check out the Mindfulness Guide curated by USC faculty member of the Dept. of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences, Dr. Yong Park, with Naomi Bock, MA. Classes and practice groups are available to all members of the USC community through the Mindful USC initiative.

Therapy Options

Learn more about mental health programs and support resources for students. Group therapy, clinical assessment appointments, one-time "solution sessions," skill-building workshops to help students manage anxiety, depression, and a number of other topics, are all available throughout the summer.

The Therapy Plus suite of options — ranging from helpful tips, to skill-building, to psychotherapy connections — provides a range of help options for students, right from their mobile phones.

Taking Time for Yourself

Take time to breathe.  Do the things that bring relaxation and give your busy mind a break. If you're a student and you need someone to sort things out with, counselors are available through "Let's Talk" outreach appointments in MySHR. A mental health check-in might be just the right thing to set a positive direction, or just talk things through.
