Computer Engineering + Mechanical Engineering + AI: Robotics
Computer Engineering is all about bridging the gap between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. It involves the development of the design and development of the Hardware (chips, circuit boards), and Software of computers. Mechanical Engineering is the study focused on the design, analysis, and manufacturing of mechanical and thermal systems, combing physics and material science. Lastly, AI powered robotics create systems that autonomously perceive their surroundings and make decisions accordingly. These three fields combined reflect upon our projects this week. Our projects included multiple Arduino robots that performed several tasks such as line tracking and obstacle avoidance, a VEX IQ system that autonomously created a polymer called GAK, a Zumi AI robot that was able to detect and avoid obstacles, and a Humanoid robot that detects and identifies victims in hazardous situations.
We started our journey by learning about Arduino using a Sparkfun Redboard-based kit. We used vibe coding to grasp the basics of Arduino.
We used VEX IQ to make a polymer known as GAK. For this robot, we created sort of a waterfall design where there was one top bowl, one middle bowl, and one bottom bowl, the top bowl contained the water and borax solution, and we programmed it to tilt 60 degrees downards so it would transfer the solution to the food coloring, which is on the second bowl, the second bowl would then transfer everything to the last bowl, which contains the glue, we would then use a automatic stirrer to mix everything together
We used vibe coding to code a line follower robot to follow a track using three light sensors. We modified the robot to adjust its balance and hold its sensors at the optimal distance from the track. The sensor fusion for the three light sensors allowed us to track the black tape line more efficiently as if we didn't have three, the robot would leave the track very easily and begin spinning in circles because the sensors dont detect anything
We used vibe coding in Python to program and train a Zumi AI robot. The robot was able to detect and avoid obstacles, and found its way out of a box using its infrared sensors.
We programmed a humanoid robot to enter simulated buildings and rescue simulated victims. Disaster recovery has become one of the most important applications of robotics, and this robot gave us a more hands-on understanding.
We built and modified a Temaya tracked vehicle to navigate obstacles. The kit we were given had a solid tracked base but only included one motor, a bulky switch, and a double pattery case. We ubgraded it with two gearmotors for power, slimmer switches, more batteries, and control electronics for navigation. We used an Arduino Uno connected to an ultrasonic sensor and two bump sensors, then used vibe coding to program obstacle avoidance. Using its sensor fusion, it was able to find its way out of a box.
