Chris the Pratt Bridge

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering the the study of systems and objects that are in motion.

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering is concerned with the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy and materials.

Truss Bridges

What are Truss Bridges?

A bridge where the load bearing structures are connected in the shape of triangles.

Why did we choose a Pratt Bridge?

A Truss bridge with vertical members connected to the diagonal members that form the triangle.

Designing/ Planning

Design

  1. Model: Pratt Truss Bridge (we believed it would be the most stable)
  2. "Linkin' Logs" idea was to be used as the base under the road to provide extra support (the basal wood was stronger on its side than when the pieces were flat)
  3. Add more reinforcements throughout the bridge to ensure sturdiness

Plan

  1. Use Bridge Simulator to find the best model
  2. Compare bridge types to find the best option
  3. Tweak the model to the materials given to us
  4. Decide dimensions of the bridge based on the robot and our materials
  5. Use the scale model to begin executing our bridge

Building

  • Split up the jobs
    • Cutting, planning, building
  • Collaborated and checked in with each other throughout the project
  • Took turns trying different things
  • Carefully thought things out as a team to ensure the best resul

The Car

Building:

Programming: Wrote a practice code after the robot was completed to see how far it would move in x amount of seconds and then using different times tested until we found the perfect time to cross the bridge. We then had the robot wait a second at the end of the bridge then return to its starting spot.
