Theranostic microplatforms for multimodal therapy

in human eye diseases, a new paradigm for the biomedical applications

Short Final Scientific Report

The theranostic implemented microplatform on MicroPlatThera has a translational potential in diabetic retinopathy or other ocular diseases. The specific structure of microplatform qualifies it to be exploited for a triple therapy (photothermal/anti-VEGF/therapeutic molecule). Our current studies prove that these microplatforms are internalized in retina cells due to their decorated surface, and by exposure to laser their content, full with resveratrol as therapeutic molecule, can be released. Moreover, the experiments sustain that microcapsule is not cytotoxic for human retina cells. Scientific results prove that the microplatform is efficient also in conditions identical to physiological ones or in simulated disease conditions. To prove that the theranostic microplatforms are efficient in humans, studies on animals are required previously.
