In the face of the escalating threats and the warmongering rhetoric promoted by the Government of the United States against the Republic of Cuba, we the undersigned, members of the faculty and staff of universities and research centres, express our strongest rejection of any form of military aggression.
The recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as the declarations by his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, which label Cuba as a "threat to national security" and publicly revive the spectre of armed intervention, constitute a violation of the principles of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations. This rhetoric is accompanied by actions that point to preparation for war, such as the deployment of the USS Nimitz carrier strike group to the Caribbean and the recent indictment of former President Raúl Castro for alleged events that took place 30 years ago.
The threat of military intervention by the greatest power on the planet against a small island would not only have incalculable consequences for peace and regional stability, but also constitutes in itself an international crime at its formulation stage.
In the academic and university sphere, we cannot remain impassive in the face of the construction of a narrative that paves the way to war. We condemn the use of disinformation and media pressure as weapons in the service of imperialist aggression. We demand the immediate cessation of the threats, the end of the criminal economic and energy blockade that suffocates the Cuban people, and full respect for Cuba's sovereignty and self-determination.
Against the logic of force, we stand for dialogue, sanity and peace.
