A Child's EL Status
When a child is registering for school, the parent/guardian must fill out a home language survey. If the completed form indicates the child speaks another language or another language is spoken in the child's home, we will be notified by the office and set up a time to screen the student. The student will take the ACCESS Screener which tests their English language abilities in: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. A student can score from 1-6 (proficient). Based on the student's scores and classroom performance, we, along with their homeroom teachers, discuss which type of services the student needs.
How We Help Your Child
We have several types of services:
push-in (an EL teacher helps students within their homeroom)
pullout 1-on-1
pullout small group
pullout whole group/ classroom, which is a daily core class taught by an EL teacher (L!, math, etc.).
We also have a Newcomers program that replaces their LA class. This is for students that are new to the country and have little to no English skills. If an EL student does not require additional assistance, he/she will not be taken for pull-out services.
**All students that score 4.7 or lower overall will take the required ACCESS test in January regardless of parent consent- this is a state requirement. The January scores will determine their eligibility for the following year. If a student scores 4.8 or higher, they have tested out of EL and will no longer take the required ACCESS test.
We communicate with homeroom & resource teachers throughout the year about the progress of each student. If the service provided is no longer appropriate (not challenging enough/needs something different), we will discuss this and figure out a way to best meet the student's needs- services are not set for the year, they can always change.
Additional Benefits of be EL
Along with services, all EL students are eligible for local & state standardized testing accommodations-
*Small group setting
*Teacher read aloud & clarification of directions/questions/answers
*Extended time
It is our goal to ensure all students are prepared to succeed in the future. We greatly value you as partners as we help support healthy development and successful education for your child. Please email the EL Team with any questions.
