Teaching Writing Between the Lines: Understanding the Concurrent Enrollment Writing Student.

Welcome to our conference site for Friday, May 8, 2026, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM at the Graduate School of Oceanography on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus. For those new to our cohort, this event is an opportunity to meet with one another and share questions, insights, highlights, and lowlights in the teaching of college writing with your concurrent enrollment classes and in subsequent email reminders. It also continues our ongoing required professional development as university writing instructors.

The way the day is planned, the morning will be dedicated to professional development in issues, practices, and research in higher education and concurrent enrollment teaching and learning.

Both morning and afternoon will include conversations and workshops (outdoors if the weather permits). The morning will focus on the nature of the concurrent enrollment student writer, while the afternoon will reflect your interests through workshops and/or discussions led by you.

Lunch will be served buffet style, and you will have time to take advantage of the beautiful Narragansett Bay campus.

We will reconvene at the end of the day to debrief our conversations, recognitions, and conclusions. I always look forward to this full day together to learn, share, and explore ideas.

Here are some things you should know about this year:

We will use the Hazard room, the Auditorium, and other small and large conference rooms for breakouts.
Dress casually. I hope it is a nice enough day for us to use the outside as much as possible and replace breakout sessions with real walk-and-talks if you choose.
We can use Parking lots A, B, and C (see the enclosed map). There is no parking registration requirement.
Our morning program includes student participation and a professional panel (more TBA).
Coffee, tea, fruit, and pastry will be set up for you at 8 AM to give us some social time and registration before we start the program at 8:30. We will end at 2:30
Buffet Lunch
Depending on the weather, consider bringing sunscreen, a sweater, or a coat. Who knows, it’s New England.

For GPS, enter "215 South Ferry Rd, Narragansett, RI 02882"

From Connecticut and Points West:

Via Rte. 1. Interstate 95N to Exit 92 in Conn. Right turn after leaving expressway, then about 1.5 mi. on Conn. 2 to 78. Take Rte. 78E (a barrier divides the roadway) 4 mi. to Rte. 1N in Westerly, R.I. Go left on Rte. 1N for about 27 mi. to the intersection of Rtes. 1 and 138. Make a right onto Bridgetown Rd. Continue to the next traffic signal (intersection of Bridgetown Rd. and Scenic 1A). Cross intersection onto South Ferry Rd.

Via Rte. 138. Interstate 95N to exit 3A in R.I. (Kingston exit). Turn right off the exit ramp onto Rte. 138E (Kingstown Rd.). Continue on 138 (passing the University’s Kingston Campus on the left) to Rte. 1 and cross the junction onto Bridgetown Rd. Continue on Bridgetown Rd. to South Ferry Rd.

From Providence and Points North:

Interstate 95S toward N.Y. and Narragansett. (From T.F. Green Airport, follow the Airport Connector signs to join 95S at Exit 13.) Continue on 95S to Exit 9 and exit in the left lane off the highway onto Rte. 4S. Continue to Rte. 1 and the junction of Rte. 138W. Take a left at the tower onto Bridgetown Rd. Continue to South Ferry Rd.

From Tiverton, and Points East:

24S to 138W. Cross Newport (toll $2) and Jamestown Bridges. Take the first exit after the bridge onto Rte. 1A toward Narragansett. Continue south to the first traffic signal and make a left onto South Ferry Rd.

Once on South Ferry Road:

Continue past South Ferry Industrial Park on the right and South Ferry Church on the left. Entrance to campus is on the right.
