In The Moon Over Star, we study the relationship between Mae and her grandfather. We also talk about her grandfather's opinion on the moon landing. One main theme of this story is how experiences in life shape your perspective of the world.
I would like to give students the opportunity to interview their own parents about a current topic of interest. We will come up with questions to ask parents as a class, and then students will go home and have a conversation with their families. Then, we will come together and discuss how the message in our story is reflected in real life.
This interview activity will allow students to utilize translanguaging while they are interviewing their families, and even while sharing their findings with the class. Students will gain perspective of people whose experiences are different than their own.
I love doing read alouds with my fourth graders, and I think this is a great way for students to gain an understanding for people who are different from themselves. I have gathered a few multicultural read alouds that could work for my class, but I would definitely want to find some that reflected the identities in my classroom as well.
We hold community circle meetings for a variety of reasons throughout the year, but every meeting serves to strengthen our classroom community and give each student a voice. Reflecting on multicultural read alouds in community circle meetings serves to deepen students' understanding of those who come from different backgrounds. These read alouds can continue to give a voice to students and groups who may not have had a strong voice to begin with. Read alouds provide an opportunity for students to connect to each other and find similarities where we didn't know there were any before.
I would also like to utilize multicultural read alouds to address current holidays (Thanksgiving, Dr. MLK Day, etc.) or our texts in ELA. Giving voices to minority groups, or giving students another perspective on a topic, will help them to understand the world from multiple viewpoints.
