OPERA Lab P.I. Dr. Lora Van Uffelen has a featured article in the June 2021 issue of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Ocean Engineering Society (OES) Beacon Newsletter. The article recaps a talk Dr. Van Uffelen presented in March 2021 based on theoretical acoustic positioning systems used for underwater navigation based conceptually on Global Navigation Satellite Systems. Her article can be found on page 15 under the Providence Chapter.

This article explores the possibility of using underwater acoustic signals in such a way that mimics the typical satellite based global positioning systems that are so commonly used with modern smartphones.
