CARISELAND
The digital humanities projects below were produced by Duke University undergraduate students in History and Create Caribbean graduate interns at Dominica State College as part of a transnational digital initiative in Caribbean Studies. The projects invited students to collaborate with peers across national borders working on similar topics within the field, such as the environment and Maroon and plantation history.
Imagined Homeland (Dominica's Literacy Geographies)
Aims to digitally recreate significant historical locations referenced literature by Dominican authors and or set in Dominica through geographical mapping, literary and historical analysis and audiovisual exhibits. The project aims to contextualize the island’s complex literary history and to explore the significant sociopolitical contexts that influenced literature about Dominica’s dynamic physical and social geography.

Is an inter-generational oral history archive dedicated to capturing, preserving and sharing the stories of the Indo-Caribbean diaspora's silenced voices. This archive works to center the stories of women and gender expansive folks at various intersections of identity. We created this archive with the intention of staying true to the tradition in Indo-Caribbean culture of using oral histories to pass down knowledge, stories, history and information through generations. It is a living, growing archive of stories from communities who have inherited the legacies of indenture, rooted in histories and traditions of oral storytelling. With this archive, we are challenging normative ideas about whose memories are deemed "worthy" of being remembered.
