How do we learn words?
If we want children to be able to permanently store words so they can be more automatic and fluent in their reading, we use the process of ORTHOGRAPHIC MAPPING.
How does Orthographic Mapping work?
It sounds like a big, scary thing, but it's actually pretty easy to incorporate in your routines!
Breaking it down as simply as I can...
Say the word
Tap it - Put up one finger for each SOUND you hear in the word. (Ex: /sh/ /ee/ /p/ - sheep has 3 SOUNDS even though it has 5 letters.)
Map the word - Make a line, box, object or something to show each sound in the word.
Graph it - Write the letter or letters that make each sound on the corresponding line or box.
Blend it - Slide your finger across the bottom of the letters as you read the sounds.
Say it - Say the word fast.
Write it - Write the word (without the boxes/lines) while saying the letters as you write.
(see the example below)
"bath"
* * *
____ ____ ____
_b_ _a_ _th_
"bath"
bath
