Learning Goals:
Target Learners: Grade 12 is the second year of Senior High School considered to be the final year in high school and making the learner eligible for employment, entrepreneurship, and/or pursuing college/university in the country. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) (2015) assessed student performance in reading at grades 4, 8, and 12 in both public and private schools across the nation. For the 12th-grade students surveyed, 72 percent performed at or above Basic in reading, 37 percent performed at or above Proficient, and 6 percent performed at the Advanced level. Looking at this result, more than half of the 12-graders are below proficient in reading hence the need for further instructions on how to critically process informational texts and literature. With this in mind, the team agreed that while all aspects of literacy are critical to eventual success, for most students, the process starts with reading skills. Also, having a collection of literary pieces that focuses on goal-setting and grass-roots stories, together with the development of the necessary 21st century learner skills, help the learners get to find inspiration from the people in the stories.
Justification for the theme
The theme we have come up with is geared towards developing the “4Cs” of education - critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity - among the target learners. It highlights the three values: diligence, collaboration and perseverance as essential elements to attain success. Since education right now aims at developing holistic 21st century learners, the theme is also anchored on appreciating local and international literary texts, which can help inculcate and inspire students to achieve the above-mentioned cognitive and affective values as tools for success.
Justification for the Arrangement of Topics
The topics are randomly arranged to accommodate the variety of selections that had been chosen. With each topic being independent from each other, intertwined with the general theme of diligence, collaboration and perseverance as essential values for being successful in different aspects of life, we collectively believe that the lessons will result to effectual changes in the lives of the learners.
