Expectations

Expectations

Being on the team is a honor and a privilege and can be taken away.

Debate Code of Conduct

Attendance:

  • Regularly attend meetings/tourneys
    • Mandatory attendance unless you have a VALID excuse
      • This is limited to doctors’ appointments, sickness (does not come to school), sports games (talk to us about practices).
    • Need to make at least 75% of practices to participate in a tournament.
    • JUNIORS BEWARE: if you do not meet this criteria to a major extent, we will NOT consider your application for captainship

Attitude:

  • You chose to be on this team. If you are going to treat this privilege like a chore, you can leave ‘_’ (but please don’t, we love you all).

Class Representatives:

This year, we are trying something new! To further your leadership abilities and allow us to effectively delegate, we are holding elections for representatives according to your respective class.

  • Each class will:
    • Elect a singular individual based off of previous conduct and skill.
    • Candidates must be approved by the captains and will proceed with a peer vote.
    • Candidates must be prepared to attend nearly all practices and tournaments
    • Candidates must be prepared to research the topics fully
  • Responsibilities:
    • You will be the liaison between your class and the captains THIS IS IMPORTANT.
    • Check the attendance of your assigned class and report it back to us after every practice/ tournament
    • Monitor the doc work/ commitment of your respective class
    • Be prepared to help your fellow classmates with research and doc help
    • REPORT any problems you see/ people that are violating the code of conduct
  • REMEMBER: As captains, we still assume full responsibility for ALL of you and are happy to answer any questions you may have. We do not want you to see this as a hand-off of duties, merely an opportunity to help you further your experience as well as help us do the best we can! BOTTOM LINE: we are always available if you are a class rep. or just part of the team :)

Tournaments:

  • Tournaments are an essential part of being on this team. You are required TO GO unless you tell us in advance (1 to 2 weeks) that you can not make it.
    • Last minute cancellation is NOT OKAY.
  • Do your best and have fun! This is a MAJOR KEY!
  • Dress in business casual
    • Girls: Heels are not necessary but nice shoes are required. Dress pants, skirts, or dresses are adequate. Blazer is required.
    • Boys: Dress pants, dress shoes, tie, blazer, and button up shirt.
  • You are required to AT LEAST attend three tournaments in the year. This is a minimum.

Motivation:

  • Repeated unexcused absences, lying about absences, problematic laziness will result in a discussion with the captain and the risk of forfeiting your spot on the team.
  • Let’s not get there folks 0_0
  • We will be tracking your scores and performance at tournaments.
    • This will result in both good and bad meetings with Captains to discuss improvements or disimprovements.
    • Life happens. Do not worry too much about bad tournaments/scores \(*_*)/

Rewards:

  • Follow this code of conduct and see Mr. McGee’s smile shine down upon you like Heaven’s Light :-)
  • If the Upland Team wins first or second in percentage of wins at a tournament, the team will get an ice cream party, donuts, or pizza.
  • If anyone gavels, good for you. You have earned the respect of your peers. Also, you will receive a surprise -_-
  • If any team gets first place, good for you. You have earned the respect of your peers. Also, you will receive a team surprise ()_().
