Five UPEI colleagues from a range of backgrounds and career stages have agreed to kick off our conference with a panel discussion of their perspectives and experiences of teaching at the intersections. Join us for what promises to be a lively conversation about Inclusion, Accessibility, and Courage in Education.
Dr. Ann Braithwaite is professor and coordinator of Diversity and Social Justice Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. Ann serves as the Equity Committee liaison on the board of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE), in addition to several EDI committees at UPEI. Her passion is to engage others in exploring how to bring questions of inclusion and justice to the classroom and to curricular programming both at UPEI and beyond.
Dr. Suzanne Gray joined the Department of Biology at UPEI in 2024 after serving as faculty for 11 years at The Ohio State University. She is a fish biologist with a passion for conserving fish around the world and for educating the next generation of aquatic scientists. Given that much Suzanne's research involves working in "the field", she is also passionate about making field work a safer and more inclusive space for all learners.
Dr. Nicholas Mercer is an Assistant Professor cross appointed in UPEI’s Environmental Studies and Island Studies programs. A transdisciplinary and community-engaged scholar, Dr. Mercer’s work explores the intersections of energy transitions and environmental justice. He employs community-based participatory action research methods to ensure that partner organizations lead, shape, and benefit from co-produced scholarship.
In the classroom, Dr. Mercer brings these same values of co-creation and empowerment into his teaching practice. An emerging scholar of teaching and learning, he draws on principles of decentralized energy systems, such as power devolution, transparency, and diversity, to reimagine more student-centered learning environments.
Dr. Sobia Ali-Faisal is the Director of the Department of EDI and Human Rights, a role she has occupied for almost one year. With an academic background in Applied Social Psychology and research on Muslim populations, Sobia comes to UPEI from community where she co-founded BIPOC USHR, a not-for-profit serving and advocating for racialized people living on PEI. Having experienced UPEI from the student, faculty, and staff perspectives, Sobia brings a unique perspective to the work she does at the University.
