Overview of the problem of practice: Case Study #4
This case study centers on Jacklyn’s leadership, as a newly appointed high school social studies chair who is now tasked to lead her department, which consist of herself and six colleagues. While she is an experienced teacher with 9 years in the department, she is the least senior member of this “eclectic” group of experienced and accomplished teachers.
Her colleagues believe they are a highly successful department with a proven track record of maintaining school rules and holding students accountable, as demonstrated by their department having the highest failure rate of the four core departments, however, she does not share their viewpoint.
In her first department meeting as chair, Jacklyn presented her “Action Plan” to address the many issues she has identified as needing improvement, which was met with contention and disinterest, as evident from only receiving a single signature on one of the many committees she proposed to address said issues.
Her problem consists of three interconnected issues: Failure to develop a cohesive department, failure to garner support for her "Action Plan", and failure to motivate her collogues to participate in the committees to address subsections of her "Action Plan".
