by Aimée Backus, Music Coordinator
This summer, the UPC music team enjoyed many creative performances, which included four services that were accompanied entirely on guitar. Our own Phil Westcott played for three of these services in a folk style…
while Nate Knipscher, a community member and graduate student at Binghamton University, lent a more classical style to his accompaniments.
Section leaders Robbie Manners, Victoria Barics, Riya Bolander, Andrea Gilebarto, and Starletta Noll-Long all sang solos throughout the summer, and we were also treated to David Berti’s lovely tenor. Becky Mebert, Austin Shadduck, and Aimée Backus all provided instrumental additions.
When Rev. Dr. Rose Niles visited in August, the UPC choir joined together to sing and make joyful noises to complement her sermon about Joseph and his dreams. We are lucky to have such a wide variety of musical styles and interests in our congregation, and we are excited to keep making music together this fall! Both the vocal choir and bell choir are always accepting new members, so please consider joining us. We would love to make music with you!
We’re delighted to welcome a new voice to our music team! Andrea Gilebarto joins our ranks in the role of soprano section leader, as Victoria Barics and Riya Bolander both graduated in May. Andrea says:
“Hello! I’m excited to be here at UPC and have been enjoying my time so far. I’m in my second year of grad school at Binghamton University and will graduate in 2025 with a Masters in opera. I grew up in First Presbyterian Church in Batavia, New York. I sang in the youth choir and I remember when I was younger going to church to specifically sing some of my favorite hymns.”
Please extend a warm welcome to Andrea when you see her at church on Sundays!

The Western Front: Christmas 1914. Out of the violence of World War I, a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.”
Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, and peace. All Is Calm is a remarkable true story in the words and songs of the men who lived it. With stunning a cappella arrangements of carols and folk songs from France, Germany, and England, the opera will be performed primarily in English with English supertitles.
Join us as we present this beautiful, holiday story with a performance on November 15th and 16th, and matinee performance on November 17th at the Tri-Cities Opera Center.
