Synthesis

Ms. Jennifer Bandao Antonio shared a compilation of Scientific Indigenous Knowledge which she used in teaching a module in STS and found that this increased student participation and enthusiasm.

Dr. Flaudette May Datuin, with the DRMAPS Team, integrated ecocriticism in teaching the course. Going beyond the human-centered perspective and changing it into an eco-perspective when humans are part of the ecosystem will hopefully lead to a better understanding of disaster risk management. A challenge was also posed as to whether GE has helped change perspectives.

The Geography Department led by Prof. Joseph Palis shared a reflective evaluation of their pedagogy through the years since its inception and the effort done to popularize the course.

A comment from one of the participants connects all the talks- Besides the discourse on indigenous knowledge vs scientific systems- it’s the value system that should be given importance: the keen sensitivity to the earth’s behavior; the effect of human intervention; the valuable observation of water, land, air and other elements that local people are closely affiliated to- indigenous or otherwise- this is the common thread running through all the talks on disaster control, geology and indigenous practice. This relationship with nature can be connected to the GE outcome of ecovalue formation.
