Synopsis

The panel interrogated the specific alignments of Theatre 11 and Theatre 12 to the current University GE framework. It also explored the possibilities and the problems encountered in the last five years of offering these reconfigured GE subjects vis-à-vis the recognition of the Department that the current academic milieu requires students to engage in a diverse range of skills and proficiencies. Finally, the panel provided a preliminary reflection on the future direction of these GE courses. The first presentation highlighted a discussion regarding how Theatre 11 – which objects of study involve public gatherings and human contacts – adapted to the call-of-the-time, particularly, the pandemic caused by COVID-19. The discussion was also an internal assessment of the subject’s effectivity using the submissions of students of their final projects and using both quantitative and qualitative data from the Student Evaluation of Teachers. The second presentation reflected on the general question: How can an acting workshop class strike the balance between masking and unmasking? The final presentation served as the synthesis of the panel. As observed in the presentations, Theatre 11 and Theatre 12 have been envisioned to be GE courses that would provide the necessary competencies in asserting social transformations and as courses that would provide creative spaces that empower students towards transformative selves.
