STS 1 CHAT BOX HIGHLIGHTS

Philosophical discourse also encourages students to confront science not as a rigid, fixed given, but as a body of knowledge that evolves with new observations, conceptualizations, and theoretizations.

In GE, we want to shake mindsets, compel our students to question and critically examine deeply held beliefs. And what are the commonly held beliefs about science? Science is truth, science is the best arbiter of truth, science is objective, science is neutral, etc. These beliefs have led to disastrous results. In STS we want students to examine these beliefs. We necessarily enter philosophy.

Students are hesitant to do groupwork due to remote learning but can be encouraged by citing examples of online collaborations before and during the pandemic. With groupings also, members should come from different disciplines to emphasize multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary collaborative work.

Plus collaborating beyond the comfort zones of their majors.

We have students from human kinetics who expressed interest in renewable energy (bioenergy) and why the Philippines is taking too long to transition.
