PLENARY 1 CHAT BOX HIGHLIGHTS

Indeed, beyond OBE, liberal arts enable students to engage critically with the dark side of globalization

and refuse to be highjacked by marketized education.

Archill Niña Capistrano

This is such a brain feast! Thank you so much to all our panelists for this cerebral discussion that affirms

GE’s continuing relevance and potential to combat what Frederick Lewis Donaldson (1925) refers to as the

“7 social sins”: wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character,

commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, politics without principle.

Archill Niña Capistrano

There are values of the pasts that we really have to set aside in these times of uncertainties.

This is difficult. How much are we willing to give up?

This is a very personal question and we cannot have a uniform answer.

Ariel Babierra

What if the box does not allow you to think outside of its realm?

Kelvin Meneses

The box is a mindset.

Fidel Nemenzo

Physical Education course should be given importance right in our University. Please give it due credit

and importance....to our VCAA. Salamat for reading this and for giving attention to this if ever.

Ma. Zenia Dulce

I imagine Socrates smiling at what is happening this morning...

indeed, within the tradition of "Know thyself."

Ma Liza Ruth Ocampo

We should have a GE for pandemic, online privacy, etc. topics that are timely and responsive to our times.

Also GE should be taught not only by academics but also practitioners in the industry

Vladimer Kobayashi

Teaching under pandemic is entirely a new discipline. So many things to learn and unlearn.

There are so many problems and yet, there are also many opportunities to learn — mula sa pagtatrabahong

mag-isa, sa tamang oras, mag-imagine ng mga scenarion, mag0aral ng iba’t ibang apps, magturo habang tumatanggap ng maraming balita ng kamatayan…

Nak Kimuell-Gabriel

This conversation should be heard by all UP constituency! This will enlighten the minds of both

faculty and students! Salamat for sharing your thoughts!

Ma. Zenia Dulce

Warning lang: we do recognize mindfulness will not be enough.

When students have to worry about parents losing their jobs, when their Lolo or Lola gets Covid

and there are no funds, it is almost cruel to ask them to relax and breathe deeply!

Michael Lim Tan

Inter/Transdisciplinary is the way to go. The UP System should have a better appreciation not just of inter-disciplinary teams, but also of faculty members who straddle different disciplines and are productive in all these disciplines, instead of forcing them to limit themselves to one discipline by virtue of the department they belong to.

Maria Rowena Raymundo

Our STS1 contents cover topics from humanities to sciences, including those topics that

"give justice to the word society in STS" (phrase from a student).

Michelle Eusebio

Probably GE courses should also teach UP students that becoming great leaders (which is what the public expects of UP graduates) need not necessarily translate to great inventions or the like... becoming a great leader often comes from simple steps that are motivated by empathy and social responsibility - the community pantry phenomenon is a good example of the point I am trying to make.

Josephine Dionisio

Future-proofing and lifelong learning really go hand in hand.

Archill Niña Capistrano

Profs ought to get serious about one on one consultations with students.

Via Zoom of course. But check in on them individually. Kahit isang beses lang per sem.

Oscar Gomez

Assessment must be linked to the values of the university, the goals of a course, the purpose of an exercise.

This is where we need to think critically, use empathy, reflect.

  • Aurora Odette Mendoza

Kung ang alam na natin ang depekto ng isang sistema (GE matters man, decisio-making, ranking man, admin matters man), ang tingin ko, ayaw nating i-confront and make the necessary changes. I think that’s thinking out of the box is all about. Bumibilang ng mga taon at dekada na sinasabi natin na “we are not yet there, ito ang meron ngayon, di pa napag-uusapan..” pero kung mahabang panahon na ito ang sinasabi natin, i think, failure na ito ng critical thinking and decisiveness/political will.

Nak Kimuell-Gabriel

It's all right to know the foreign stuff, but students should be aware of what are local

in emphasizing nationalism and being global in GE courses po.

Michelle Eusebio

RA 9500 - eto po yung lagi kong binabanggit sa aking students para malaman nila ay kanilang pribelehiyo

at responsibilidad bilang mga iskolar ng bayan.

Alvaro Calara

We should redefine the concept of nationalism in our times. I think the nationalism we subscribed to is an old concept from 18th century. Same nationalism which brought us to two world wars.

Vladimer KobayashI

Reflection papers on the 3 important lessons students learned help them see how these lessons relate to everyday life. This way they learn not only about the lessons, but also appreciate how these will help them too. Their sense of identity, nationalism and being Filipino, and learning about various cultures and intercultural differences is discussed and they themselves see how important these things are and how it can be used in everyday life.

Maybel Fernandez-Vallado

Inter-CU GE team teaching is now a reality with the remote learning and teaching setup we are now practicing.

Let's prepare all UP campuses for this new mode.

Nathaniel Anasco

Eto po ang babaunin ko - think well, think of others, and think together. Salamat po.

Alvaro Calara
