Just a comment: I believe that it wouldn’t hurt to err on the side of compassion/empathy. Whether a student is truthful in declaring that she/he is having mental health or other personal issue(s), a teacher in pandemic times should adopt a compassionate reaction and action. Because if the student tells the truth then the teacher would have genuinely helped the student. Meanwhile, if the student is not truthful, it’s a conscience call for the student.
At least, the teacher has not denied consideration to the student especially when desperately needed.
