The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the College of Science, University of the Philippines Baguio will host the first SAB-ATAN 2021: International Conference on Mathematical Sciences and Applications this November 24-26, 2021. For the indigenous Kankana-ey people in the Cordillera region where UP Baguio is located, sab-atan is a meeting place or a venue for gathering. The conference then is envisioned to be a sab-atan, a point of convergence for mathematicians and mathematics educators from all over the world to share mathematical ideas and research work. It will be a venue to build collaborations and a platform for young mathematicians to network with other scholars working in their respective research areas.
The conference is a celebration of the retirement of Professor Priscilla Supnet-Macansantos and a tribute to her scholarship and contributions to public service. A professor of Mathematics whose area of expertise is in Analysis, Dr. Macansantos is instrumental in the growth of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. As the first Chancellor of UP Baguio, a position she held for twelve years, she helped steer the development of the university as a leading institution of higher learning in the country.
The main focus of the first Sab-atan conference is on Analysis and applications, and will feature plenary talks and parallel paper presentations on fixed-point theory, mathematical modelling, differential equations and inclusions, functional analysis, complex analysis, dynamical systems, and numerical methods among others. The conference will be held virtually via Zoom.
Dr. Priscilla Supnet-Macansantos
Dr. Priscilla Supnet-Macansantos obtained her BS degree in Mathematics, magna cum laude, from the University of the Philippines Baguio. She took her MS and PhD degrees also in Mathematics, from University of Delaware, USA. She was an exchange scientist at Osaka Prefecture University, Japan and shortly after was a visiting research fellow at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate students. Her field of interest is Mathematical Analysis, specifically, Differential Equations and Inclusions.
She was the first Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Baguio when it became an independent constituent university in 2002. She previously served as Dean for two years when the university was still called UP College Baguio. She held a key role in the recognition of BS Mathematics as CHED Center of Development. Her input in the conceptualization, proposal writing and defense of both MS and PhD Mathematics were essential for the success of the launching of these graduate programs in UP Baguio. An avid researcher, she has published numerous articles in the field of Mathematics and was awarded multiple International Publication Awards. Also a writer of poetry, essays and short stories, she has literary works published such as in Home Life Magazine and in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. She was awarded the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for her essay “Departures.”
A well-accomplished mathematician, scientist and writer, she continues to mentor young, bright minds in her field of expertise.
