The municipality has a land area of 55.02 square kilometers or 21.24 square miles which constitutes 2.85% of Laguna's total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 24,945. This represented 0.74% of the total population of Laguna province, or 0.15% of the overall population of the CALABARZON region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 453 inhabitants per square kilometer or 1,174 inhabitants per square mile (Paete, Laguna Profile – PhilAtlas, n.d.).
Paete Laguna is primarily known as the wood carving capital of the Philippines. It is home to numerous wood carving artists in the country that produced magnificent art using the material wood. Handcrafted wood statues and sculptures, carved wood paintings, and wood utensils are some of the products that can be also called art produced in this small municipality. The tradition of pag-ukit dates back since time immemorial. Even the national hero, Jose Rizal, mentioned its works in one of his novels. The exquisite talent of the Paeteños have reached overseas with some of their works reportedly displayed and used in some countries such as the Vatican and United States. (Phillipines Carving Art, n.d.). Hence, this is a popular destination among tourists who is enthusiastic about wood art that falls under cultural tourism.
