Here’s what my setup looks like on recording day. More details about the tools or equipment are shared here
THE PROCESS
When I opened Audacity the first thing that I checked was this part of the tool, to make sure that is set to its standard setting.
Next, I navigated to 'View' > 'Toolbars' > 'Device Toolbar'. This gave me the options to select my input and output devices, choose whether to record in mono or stereo, and set the sample rate.
In this step, I selected the 'File' > 'Open' > 'Music File'. For this output, I chose to use a backing track created by AcousticHeaven (2018). The video is titled Orange and Lemons – Hanggang Kailan (Karaoke/Acoustic Instrumental) and was uploaded on YouTube.
This is what it looks like after inserting the backing track. To make sure it doesn’t overpower my voice when I record, I selected the option to normalize the track by highlighting it, then going to ‘Effect’ > ‘Volume and Compression’ > ‘Normalize’.
Here, to create a separate track for my voice recording, I went to ‘Tracks’ > ‘Add New’ > ‘Stereo Track.’ This allows me to see and edit my vocals independently from the backing track.
To start recording, I clicked the red circle icon in the upper left corner of the toolbar. I then recorded my voice in sync with the backing track.
After recording my vocals, I moved on to the editing stage. I compressed my voice recording and normalized it to polish certain parts. I also used a limiter to control the louder sections of the vocals. To make my voice sound livelier, I added some reverb. For equalization, I adjusted the bass and treble boost to 4 dB instead of 9 dB. Finally, I applied noise reduction to make the overall sound cleaner.
After polishing and listening to the song several times, I finally uploaded it to SoundCloud so it could be embedded in this blog. This way, anyone reading my work can easily listen to the cover while going through the details of my process. Uploading it online also gave me a sense of accomplishment, since it was my first time recording and sharing a song publicly.
