MMS 172 Assignment 1: Pre-production
August 1, 2025
For my final project, I plan to produce a book chapter reading or do a podcast, but I’m leaning more towards doing a podcast. The reason I’m considering doing a book reading is because I wanted to incorporate the art of foley as well. I was fascinated with how these sound effects make a movie come to life. I once saw a behind-the-scenes video on social media showing how a radio drama was produced. The voice actors also created the sound effects themselves, such as using a piece of metal to mimic lightning, or use a wooden material to create the sound effect of slamming a door. However, the latter sounds like so much work, and will take a lot of planning, that’s why I wanted to do a podcast instead, but the topic to be discussed is what I’m still trying to think about. But I’m planning to make it something personal but still relatable, especially among us BAMS students.
As mentioned in my introduction, I don’t actually have much of a background in sound production. That’s why the set-up for the podcast may seem simpler, but I wanted to do it as right as possible.
Honestly, I am not a music person, nor technically knowledgeable about audio. That’s why doing this project is sort of challenging for me, but exciting as well. Since I am planning to do a podcast, there are things I need to consider for a well-produced output. However, I would admit that I am not fully equipped in terms of skills and equipment. So I’ll try to work around what’s available at the moment.
Timeline
Equipment
Zoom H4n Pro
For this project, I borrowed an audio recorder (Zoom H4n Pro) so I can at least have a better recorder rather than using only my phone. Before, whenever we needed to submit a video with voiceover requirements, I usually recorded with my phone. However, one thing I observed is the sharp “ss” sounds, sibilance, especially when pronouncing the letter “S”. It’s really bothering, but given the fact that I only used a phone to record an audio. I guess I just have to bear with it. That’s why, for this project, I wanted to use proper audio recording equipment. Also, it can be a standalone recorder, thus it can replace a traditional audio interface.
Signal Flow
Honestly, I find this course intimidating at first since I don’t have a strong background in audio, and I am not musically inclined either. I haven’t participated in forums yet, because I am not as elaborate as my classmates when analyzing music. But I’m pretty much looking forward to appreciating the creative and technical aspects of audio production with this project.
I’m just hoping I could do it properly and achieve what I wanted to happen.
