WHO WE ARE
The IVPPI Laboratory is dedicated to understanding the complex biological interactions among insect vectors, plant hosts, and plant pathogens. Our research integrates molecular biology, entomology, plant pathology, and biotechnology to address major issues in crop health and agricultural productivity.
Through our studies, we aim to develop science-based solutions that support farmers, researchers, and the broader agricultural community.

Media Feature: International Day of Plant Health 2026
Our team joins the global community in celebrating the International Day of Plant Health on 12 May 2026, with this yearโs theme: โPlant Biosecurity for Food Security and Nutrition.โ
From 12โ14 May 2026, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) are hosting an exhibition at the FAO Atrium in Rome, highlighting how plant biosecurity safeguards crops, strengthens food systems, and protects the environment.
The event underscores the critical role of plant health in ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Media Feature: Plant Doctors on Wheels in Lucena City
Our team took part in the Plant Doctors on Wheels event in Lucena City, Quezon, where Dr. Karen B. Alviar served as one of the Plant Doctors. Farmers brought damaged crop samples, invasive weeds, and pest specimens for on-site diagnosis and expert guidance. Plant doctors and crop protection specialists addressed concerns affecting major crops such as corn, cacao, coconut, and vegetables.
The event also included learning sessions on pest and disease management, pesticide safety, online buying and selling issues, and the use of biocontrol agents for sustainable farming. The activity concluded with the awarding of certificates to plant doctors and farmer participants.
Organized by the Pest Management Council of the Philippines (PMCP) and the Philippine Phytopathological Society (PPS), in collaboration with the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist of Quezon, industry partners, and CropLife Philippines, the initiative underscores the value of connecting science directly with farmers to support informed field decisions.

Media Feature: DOST-PCAARRD Reviews Ongoing Sweetpotato and Banana Research Projects
Our project was featured during the annual review and evaluation conducted by the Crops Research Division (CRD) of DOST-PCAARRD, which included a laboratory visit to the Insect Vector Plant Pathogen Interactions (IVPPI) Laboratory at Institute of Weed Science, Entomology, and Plant Pathology (IWEP), UPLB-CAFS.
The review covered three ongoing research initiatives, including our project on the development of an RNAi-based biopesticide against the sweetpotato weevil (Cylas formicarius). The activity assessed project accomplishments, research progress, and opportunities for future research initiatives, underscoring DOST-PCAARRD's continued support for innovative and sustainable solutions to agricultural challenges.

Our project team was featured in a recent article published by the Department of Science and Technology โ National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP) during the Ilocos Youth Science Forum and Exhibit for the 2025 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebrations.
During the event, our team presented the research โEffect of biofertilizer inoculation of soil on expression profile of defensin gene in maize and its subsequent effects on Peregrinus maidis Ashmead (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).โ
The study highlighted how biofertilizer application can enhance plant growth and strengthen plant defense responsesโparticularly the expression of the defensin gene in maizeโwhich may influence the pest interaction dynamics with P. maidis.
Our participation showcased the potential of biofertilizer-based approaches in sustainable agriculture, aligning with the forumโs goal of encouraging science-based innovations among the youth and local communities.

Our project was featured by DOST-PCAARRD during its 53rd Anniversary celebration, recognizing our work on the potential of RNA interference (RNAi) as a biopesticide against the sweetpotato weevil (Cylas formicarius)โone of the cropโs most destructive pests.
Sweetpotato weevils burrow into the tubers, causing damage that results in bitterness, discoloration, and up to 80% yield loss. Our team is developing RNAi-based and biological control approaches to provide farmers with safer, more sustainable pest management options.
