General Assessment
General Assessment
From the assignments I reviewed, it seems my classmates and I can continue to improve and learn about audio for this coming semester. While I’ve only scanned through 10 to 15 assignments, I noticed a few standout recordings that impressed me. These recordings exhibited a high level of clarity, professionalism in presentation, and effective use of audio techniques such as clear voice modulation, appropriate background music (if any), and overall sound quality.
There are definitely classmates whose recordings are already quite polished, not necessarily the ones that can be compared to professional podcasters but almost at par with them. I say "almost" because I don’t want to assume they are on par... if that makes sense. It might just be me getting hung up on the "professional" perspective simply because they (podcasts, streamers, etc.) are more widely known, which could lead to thinking, "Oh, they're professionals." However, upon closer examination, it would be unfair of me to fixate solely on that and overlook the quality of their audio. Their attention to detail in sound production and delivery suggests they are on track for producing high quality audio content.
Conversely, there are others who may need more practice and refinement. I observed that some recordings lacked clarity (I included) due to background noise or inconsistencies in volume and pacing. I believe my classmates and I would benefit from focusing on basic audio recording techniques such as precise mic positioning to minimize unwanted noise, effective management of room acoustics to enhance sound clarity, and mastering editing skills to achieve smoother transitions and balanced audio levels. With dedicated effort and guidance, we can certainly improve over the course of the semester. By honing these skills, they can elevate the overall quality of their recordings and create content that is more engaging and professional.
Random 5
Terelle used a wireless microphone connected to the phone; while her voice isn't the strongest, her kalimba playing is excellent.
2. Clar used headphones purchased from Shopee. The voice quality isn't great, and there's a slight echo in the music that makes it obvious the recording was done on a different device, almost like it's pirated.
3. Kiyara used an iPhone 12 Pro Max. The voice quality is good enough, although there's a bit of static in the background noise, which is more noticeable than the voice itself. The tapping of glasses was clear, but the static persisted throughout.
4. Glyza used a Fantech MXX-01 Leviosa microphone. Her voice is crisp, with only a slight background noise that might be attributed to the air conditioning in the room; overall, it's quite good. The keyboard sound is also clear, with a minor background noise aside from that, it's satisfactory.
5. Clarice used a compact microphone with less static compared to Kiyara. Her voice is clear, though there is still a slight presence of static that doesn't overpower her voice. The sound of the keyboard is sharp and crisp, capturing the strength of her fingers on the keys and desk, creating a bass-like sound. Unfortunately, I couldn't embed her clips because I think they were set to private rather than public viewing and sharing.
Self Assessment
If I were to rate myself relative to the rest of the class, I would consider myself around a 7 out of 10 in terms of proficiency in recording audio. Reflecting on the assignments I've reviewed and comparing them to those of my classmates, I acknowledge that while my recordings generally meet the basic criteria of clarity, minimal background noise, and consistent volume and pacing, there are areas where I can improve to reach the level of some standout recordings.
In contrast to recordings that demonstrate exceptional clarity and professionalism similar to those of the faculty-in-charge or professional content creators, I see opportunities for growth in my skills. Specifically, I aim to enhance my proficiency in advanced editing techniques. This includes refining my ability to perform detailed post-production tasks such as noise reduction, EQ adjustments, and mastering audio levels for optimal clarity and impact.
Moreover, I recognize the importance of expanding my knowledge of audio equipment and exploring more sophisticated recording setups. By experimenting with different microphones, exploring various recording environments, and understanding their effects on sound quality, I aim to elevate the overall quality of my recordings.
In addition to technical skills, I plan to deepen my understanding of audio storytelling techniques. This involves learning how to effectively integrate sound effects, music, and narrative elements to create compelling and engaging audio content. I believe that by enhancing my storytelling capabilities, I can not only improve the quality of my recordings but also enhance the overall listener experience.
Moving forward, I am committed to a path of continuous improvement. Seeking constructive feedback from peers and instructors will be crucial in identifying areas for growth and implementing actionable steps to refine my skills. Overall, there's a shared opportunity for all of us to enhance our skills in audio production and create more polished work moving forward. By maintaining a proactive approach to learning and practice throughout the semester, I am confident that I can progress from my current level and contribute positively to the class's collective learning journey in audio production.
