ICropS Field Genebank

Mission Statement

The ICropS Field Genebank aims to conserve, maintain, document, and sustainably utilize living collections of economically, scientifically, culturally, and ecologically important plant species. As a living conservation and learning facility of the Institute of Crop Science, College of Agriculture and Food Science, University of the Philippines Los Baños, it supports plant genetic resources conservation, instruction, research, characterization and evaluation of plant materials, and public education. The facility seeks to maintain diverse and well-documented plant collections for present and future generations while promoting awareness of the importance of plant diversity, conservation, and sustainable use.

Brief Description

The ICropS Field Genebank is an approximately 4-hectare living plant collection located within the University of the Philippines Los Baños. It functions primarily as a field genebank and conservation orchard for perennial and other plant genetic resources that are best maintained as living plants.

The collection includes fruit and other economically useful plant species and accessions maintained for conservation, teaching, research, characterization, evaluation, propagation, and utilization. The facility also provides living materials for undergraduate and graduate instruction and serves as a site where students, researchers, visitors, and other stakeholders can learn about plant diversity, crop genetic resources, conservation, taxonomy, horticulture, and sustainable utilization.

Rather than serving solely as a display garden, the Field Genebank has an important scientific conservation function. Individual plants and accessions are maintained as documented components of the Institute's plant genetic resources collections, with particular emphasis on materials relevant to Philippine agriculture and biodiversity.
