Last week we learned about:
how our hearing mechanism act as transducers for sounds (from our ear to our brain)
the different auditory functions of the hearing mechanism
Pre-lecture question:
what happens when there is an error in transduction?
what are the different types of hearing loss
How is it Identified or assessed?
Review your Introduction to Audiology notes on hearing loss, types and severity before watching the video on hearing loss and communication.
Objective and subjective hearing tests done by Audiologists to identify hearing loss and its severity. As speech therapists, the test results will help us identify (a) presence of hearing loss and (b) if hearing loss can impact the patient's communication skills.
The pure tone hearing assessment is the most common hearing test conducted to both children and adults. Results of the test are displayed on an audiogram. As speech therapists, we should be able to interpret the results, in order to (a) understand how hearing loss impacts communication skills and development, (b) to serve as a check and balance on our subjective hearing assessments, and speech and language assessment, and (c) to guide in deciding direction for intervention.
