Welcome to our resource guide for learning about the Algonquin Nation. Given that they are the original inhabitants of the National Capital Region of Canada, as well as many vast areas of land surrounding it, we ought to know about our gracious hosts! We acknowledge that we, who live in this region, are on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Territory. Furthermore, we the authors acknowledge that as non-indigenous Canadians, we have explored this beautiful culture from an outside perspective. We humbly wish to share some of the knowledge we have gathered without presenting it as an exhaustive or authoritative list of what it means to be Algonquin.
We present here a starting point to understanding some important features of the Algonquin Nation as a people and a culture as we interpret them, and we provide resources for you to deepen and enrich your understanding. We take you through some of the history we share and the relationships we have developed in relation to this beautiful land. We explore some of the basics of the Algonquin language and why it is of great value. We discuss some of the most important cultural tenets and practices. Finally, we provide a list of beautiful Algonquin literary works that you can enjoy and learn from.
