Research program entitled " Study and publication of attic pottery from the excavations in Kabeirion and Hephaistia on the Island of Lemnos" (2024 - )The two sites selected for this program are among the most emblematic of the ancient world. The Kabeirion, one of the oldest and longest-standing sanctuaries in the Aegean island sphere, was founded toward the end of the 8th century BC and remained a major center of mystery cult worship until Late Antiquity. As for Hephaestia, it was the second most important city on the island, that together with Myrina gave rise to the island’s designation as Dipolis. The study focuses on imported Attic pottery of the Archaic and Classical periods from the two sites, recovered through both earlier excavations by the Italian Archaeological School and recent systematic investigations by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Lesbos.Funding: Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular PolicyDuration: 2024 – until now
Preparation of a scientific volume, as part of the international Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum series, dedicated to the collection of black-figure lekythoi in the Kanellopoulos Museum (2024-2028)The Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA) is the longest-running research project of the Union Académique Internationale. It comprises a series of authoritative catalogues documenting primarily ancient Greek painted pottery held in collections worldwide. Since the publication of its first fascicule in 1922, more than 400 volumes have appeared, illustrating over 100,000 vases from collections in 24 countries. The scientific objective and particular value of the CVA volumes has been, and continues to be, the most comprehensive and systematic study possible of ancient vases, accompanied by an exhaustive bibliography encompassing research on the ancient potters and painters, their iconography, and their overall significance within ancient Greek culture. The CVA volume under preparation comprises seventy (70) vessels held in the Kanellopoulos Museum, the vast majority of which are lekythoi, alongside three (3) alabastra and one (1) amphoriskos. The collection includes black-figure, white-ground examples as well as a few in the Six technique and is notable for its exceptional chronological and typological range. This wide range places the collection of black-figure lekythoi at the Kanellopoulos Museum among the most significant, both in Greece and internationally.Funding: The Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation Duration: 2024 – until now
