He researches and teaches on development-related issues that intertwine between social philosophy, analytical measurement and applied development. Some of his publications are on agrarian issues, measurement of development indicators, and poverty, among others.

He is a recipient of the maiden Dr VKRV Rao Fellow Award 2025, conferred on him by The Applied Economics Society. He is a Member of two Technical Expert Groups for Household Surveys under the auspices of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, viz., the first-ever Household Income Survey for India, ongoing during 2026-27, and the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2027-28.
He is a recipient of the maiden Dr VKRV Rao Fellow Award 2025, conferred on him by The Applied Economics Society. He has been instrumental in spearheading the Odisha Millets Mission (now Shree Anna Abhiyan), which brought together the Government, civil society, and academia for a pro-people action research initiative. His work on Cyclone Fani, as part of a multidisciplinary team involving the Government of Odisha and many multilateral agencies, addressed the macroeconomic and human impacts, with important methodological and policy implications. His work on farmers' suicides in Maharashtra led to the establishment of the Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavlamban Mission and other policy outcomes, including deliberations that led to a debt waiver.
