I was born in a city which is the capital of West Java Province, Indonesia. The city is called Bandung, which is known by several names/nicknames, i.e. 1) Flower City; 2) Paris van Java; 3) Capital of "Bumi Pasundan"; 4) Capital of Asia-Africa, and maybe (because of my limited knowledge) there are still many more nicknames.
Bandung is called the "Kota Kembang" (Flower City) because of its natural beauty, which is filled with flowers and trees. This nickname was given by journalist Sutan Satiawira in the 1930s. The reasons why Bandung is called the Flower City: 1) Bandung has many fertile flower gardens; 2) The cool air temperature makes Bandung an ideal place for various types of flowers to grow. 3) Bandung has many beautiful parks divided by clear water rivers; 4) Bandung has many flower shops and flower seedlings in various places; 5) Bandung holds the Bloemen Corsc (Flower Parade) as an annual event.
In addition to the Flower City, Bandung is nicknamed the Paris van Java because of its beauty, similar to the city of Paris in France. This nickname is more about the conditions in the past when it was designed and built.
Then, Bandung was called the Capital of Pasundan because at the beginning of the independence of the Republic of Indonesia, in the period 1948-1950, Bandung was the capital of the State of Pasundan. A phenomenologist, psychologist, and cultural figure, Martinus Antonius Weselinus Brouwer (M.A.W. Brouwer) gave a famous quote about the Land of Pasundan. He said " Bumi Pasundan lahir ketika Tuhan sedang tersenyum (The Land of Pasundan was born when God was smiling)" because of the beauty of the Pasundan area, including Bandung.
Bandung is called the capital of Asia-Africa because it hosted the Asia-Africa Conference in 1955. This nickname was coined by the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, in his speech.
