Dry needling is an intramuscular, invasive procedure that consists of inserting a thin monofilament needle into a trigger point in order to elicit a local twitch response when the needle is manually moved around the area in miniscule motions after insertion.
TENS is the application of electrical stimulation to the skin for purposes of pain control. The electrodes, or the sticky pads, are applied over the painful area to activate different underlying nerve fibers at the spinal level.
Hot packs are recommended more for long term pain or injury. This type of therapy is treated with hot towels, saunas, heat wraps, steam, and even hot baths.
Cold Packs
Cold packs are designated more towards acute injury or pain. Cold therapy covers a wide variety of items including ice packs, gel packs, cold wraps, and cryotherapy. This type of therapy is aimed at reducing pain, inflammation, and swelling.
