Lecturer at the University of Sulaimani - Kurdistan Centre for Documentation and Academic Research
My name is Hawraman Karim, and I am a scholar of Political Sociology and Collective Memory from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. I work as a Lecturer at the University of Sulaimani, where my research focuses on trauma, memory, and nation-building in post-conflict societies.
I am from Halabja, and the 1988 genocide there has deeply shaped my life and work. For over 13 years, I have dedicated myself to documenting and understanding the collective memory of the Halabja people and the Kurdish experience as a whole. This began with my Master’s thesis, "Collective Memory of Halabja People," which I later published as a book.
My PhD research examined the crucial intersection of Collective Memory and Nation-Building in the Kurdistan Region.
I am actively involved in the international academic community as a member of the Memory Studies Association (MSA).
I am currently a Visiting Research Fellow at Durham University in the UK, supported by the British Institute for the Study of Iraq (BISI), where I am conducting comparative research on memorials related to genocide and civil war.
Leading the Halabja Genocide Collective Memory Project, a digital archive I launched with a grant from the Nahrein Network and University College London. This project, accessible at [https://halabjagcm.com](https://halabjagcm.com), is dedicated to preserving survivor testimonies and documenting memorial sites.
My work is driven by a commitment to ensuring that the voices of victims are heard, that complex histories are honestly examined, and that memory serves as a tool for justice and understanding rather than division.
