The Balkans have been aspiring and struggling to join the EU for about two decades now. While the endeavours to meet EU expectations for integration have set in motion various areas of social and political life in the Balkan countries, how these would affect Balkan cultures, languages and lifestyles seems of marginal importance. The topic of this conference ‘The Balkan languages in the integration context’ is intended as an invitation to scholars, teacher educators, policy-makers, pre-service and in-service teachers from Albania and the WB region primarily but also worldwide to look into the future of Balkan languages in view of the likely integration to EU. What integration would mean from the cultural and linguistic point of view, how it will affect language policies and language teacher education policies, minority languages issues, linguistic diversity, intercultural communication and education will call for the scholars’ attention to join together in this conference and share their views and ideas.

Some of the proposed topics for this conference include:

•        Language policies in the Balkans

•        Minority language rights

•        Language teacher education for EU integration

•        Intercultural education in the age of globalisation

•        Linguistic diversity in the Balkans

•        The role of languages in the Balkans in the integration process

•        Plurilingualism and multilingualism in the Balkans

Papers are welcome from but are not limited to:

The conference languages are English and Italian. A selection of papers will be published after the conference.
