Students are learning their letter sounds in English and Spanish. Some sounds are the same between the two languages, but others are different. It is more important to us that they learn the SOUND the letter makes, rather than the letter's name. In English, the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) makes two sounds, so learning the name of their vowels in English IS important. Learning the sounds of the vowels in both languages is essential to reading.
