UPCS DRESS CODE

All students are expected to demonstrate high standards of appearance and appropriate dress at school and on field trips. The dress code is in place to support safety and a positive learning environment. The dress code may slightly limit personal choice of styles or inconvenience some individuals. However, the rules established for the school will support an atmosphere of learning and are for the good and safety of all. Students and parents should make sure that cleanliness, health and safety are guides to acceptable school attire.

Students will receive one warning about a Dress Code violation and will be required to replace an article of clothing with a loaner from school, if available. Parents/guardians will be called to bring appropriate clothes, accessories, or shoes if a loaner is not available. After a first warning, parents will be called and asked to bring appropriate clothes, accessories, or shoes to school. Please see below for specific requirements:

1. The appearance of student clothing shall not be disruptive to the educational process or constitute a health or safety hazard.

2. Clothing, jewelry, and personal items shall be free of writing, pictures, or any other insignia which is vulgar, lewd, obscene, profane, sexually suggestive or which promotes the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, weapons, illegal activity, hate speech, gang or violent affiliations, or imagery/language that targets any group.

3. Securely fastened closed-toe and closed-heel or secure back-strap shoes are required each day. Footwear that leaves the toes or heel exposed, including flip-flops, slides, slippers, or backless shoes, are not permitted unless specifically approved for a school activity.

4. Clothing must cover undergarments so that it is not visible during normal wear; students should be able to sit, bend and move without needing to adjust clothing. See-through tops and exposed abdomens are prohibited. Shirts must have straps attached.

5. The entire area of the body from the armpit to the bottom of the outfit is covered, including undergarments. The bottom of the outfit must cover to the mid-thigh.

6. Caps and hats are saved for outside the building.

All rules apply to all students all the time including Spirit Days, holidays, or school-sponsored events. Any deviation from the dress policy requires prior approval from administration.
