The Quantum Era
Celebrating Milestones in Quantum Theory
(2025–2027)
We are a group of Italian university professors and researchers dedicated to celebrating a century of groundbreaking developments in quantum theory.
The Quantum Era: Celebrating Milestones in Quantum Theory (2025–2027) is a three-year academic initiative that will mark the 100th anniversaries of some of the most foundational breakthroughs in the history of quantum mechanics. Through a rich program of conferences, lectures, and interdisciplinary events, we seek to reflect on the scientific, historical, and philosophical significance of quantum theory—its origins, its conceptual transformations, and its lasting influence.
Each year of the project will highlight a major milestone:
2025 – Matrix Mechanics
Commemorating the birth of quantum mechanics through the formalism of matrix mechanics, introduced by Heisenberg, Born, and Jordan.
2026 – Wave Mechanics
Focusing on the contributions of Schrödinger and others to wave-based formulations of quantum theory.
2027 – Uncertainty and Complementarity
Honoring the centenaries of Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle and Bohr’s Principle of Complementarity, which deeply shaped the interpretation of quantum phenomena.
Alongside these three core themes, the project will also explore other crucial conceptual elements of quantum mechanics, including topics related to measurement, superposition, entanglement, and the philosophical implications of quantum theory.
Our group brings together scholars from philosophy of science, history of science, and logic, fostering a truly interdisciplinary approach. In collaboration with academic institutions throughout Italy, The Quantum Era aims to honor the intellectual legacy of quantum mechanics while opening new spaces for critical and cross-disciplinary engagement.
