Lessons in Living

A NOTE FROM LNL

Dear Unity Families,

In these unprecedented times, as we’re all being inundated with continuous streams of ever-changing information and constant news cycles, we are affirming with you the core component of the Lessons in Living Care & Support program: Love. Quite simply, love is the backbone of our program and a large part of why Lessons in Living exists.

As we all practice the recommended safety measures of social distancing, please know that Lessons in Living continues wrapping each student, family member, faculty and staff member in love and care and support. Rest assured that all of the Unity team is working diligently to be a steadfast, calming presence for you and your families.

Most importantly, please know that we love each one of you and will be here in whatever way we can; please do not hesitate to reach out to us and ask.

There is an old saying in Unity that could serve us well as we navigate these trying times - “Why is this happening for me/us?” The idea behind the adage is to look beyond circumstances for the lesson. In this moment, we’ve collectively come to a space where we’re all being asked to take a pause, which is something we practice each week in Lessons in Living. We often discuss “the way we practice is the way we perform”; now is the time to put our words into action. Let us take this moment to pause and practice expressing gratitude; for life, for breath, for each other. Let us practice peace in our pause, choosing to focus our perspective in a place of caring for and supporting one another. When our minds inevitably wander into anxiety and fear (which is human and natural in uncharted territory), let’s take this moment to practice shifting our focus from mind into heart, choosing gratitude, compassion, courage or any one of the virtues on the pillars of our campus’s beautiful Peace Walk.

Right now and throughout the coming days we encourage you to do the following as needed:

  1. Pause, Take A Moment

  2. Relax Your Shoulders

  3. Relax Your Jaw

  4. Inhale Slowly

  5. Exhale Slower

  6. Soften Your Gaze

  7. Shift Your Attention To Your Heart

  8. Choose Love, Peace, Or Gratitude

  9. Let It Fill Your Heart

  10. Radiate From Inside, Out To The World

With Love,

Rosanna Edwards, Kelly Kerr, and Andrea Bevan
