Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), also known as the Far Eastern Leopard, is one of eight subspecies of leopards with fewer then 100 individuals left in population making them critically endangered. Over the last few decades the Amur leopard had slowly increasing, from an estimated population of 30 in the year 2000. They are found in Southwest Primorye in the Russian Far East, and along the Russian border with Heilongjiang Province and Jilin Province in Northeast China. The Amur leopard is adapted to the cool climate, having a thick fur coat reaching 7.5cm in length during winter months. Unlike other leopards, their coat is paler in color for camouflage in the snow. Their legs are a little longer and feet are a bit bigger than other leopard sub-species, which better equips them for the snow. They are said to be the most accomplished stalkers and climbers of the big cats. Their immense strength allows them to tackle prey up to 10 times their weight! Being considered the top predator in their ecosystem, as a result, they play an important role in maintaining a balanced species ratio in their region.
