Endangered Status of The Axolotl
As of October of 2019, the Axolotl was placed as critically endangered by the IUNC. According to the IUNC there are only 50-1000 Mature Axolotls left in the wild and that number is decreasing every day
One of the major issues with Axolotls is their numbers. Since there are only 50-1000 mature Axolotls left in the wild it means their Gene Pool is very low and it may be hard for the species to evolve or Adapt to their new environment.
The second major issue is their inability to Migrate away from their home water sources because there is no way of getting out of the lakes and local channels. However, if there was a way an axolotl would not be able to thrive in fast moving water or on land. This means that this species is unable to migrate and unable to find a better and safer home.
even though Axolotls are endangered they are found readily in the pet trade. Even though these species are bread commercially many places have banned the sales of Axolotls because of the affect they might have on native salamander species.
Scientific Name- Ambystoma mexicanum
Fun Facts
The word Axolotl originates for the ancient Aztec language and means "water dog." The Aztecs named this little creature after their god Xolotl because they believed he disguised himself as a salamander to avoid being sacrificed to a higher power.
Axolotls only appear in 2 lakes around Mexico City (Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco) and are very rarely seen in the wild. the
Theses cute creature share a homologous structure with a salamander. now unlike salamander these creatures do not undergo metamorphism. they keep their child features all the way to adulthood. They also live their entire life in the water.
They can live to be 15 years old and grow up to 18 inches!
Axolotls are able to re-generate limbs that are lost or damaged making them a very interesting creature to scientists.
Axolotls also have a vestigial structure. Even though Axolotls live their entire lives in water they do have lungs and gills. the gills help them breath in the water, but the lungs have no purpose because an axolotl can only live a short time out of the water.
