Middleware, Web Services and SOA

How did we arrive to the concept of Web Services and Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and applications ?

In this lecture we will look at this question from the point of view of the evolution of the architectures of distributed information systems. In fact, in order to understand Web services, we need to take a step back and look at the way middleware and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) technology has been evolving in the last decades [1,2]. Then, we will be able to better understand current Web services architectures and their applications in current state-of-the-art information systems.
