This presentation explores ongoing research on the gender participation gap in political participation among students at higher education institutions in Germany. Despite progress, significant gender disparities persist in the general public, with women often less involved in institutionalized or protest-oriented political activities. While much research has focused on voting and political interest, this research expands the scope to include a broader range of activities to assess the gap. Moreover, it concentrates on the higher education phase, a critical yet underexplored period for political socialization.
Using data from student cohort of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) and employing logistic regression models, this study investigates how academic settings influence gender differences in political participation. Preliminary findings identify ongoing disparities, particularly in demonstrations and volunteering, highlighting the role of educational environments in either reinforcing or challenging traditional gender norms. Understanding these dynamics can inform strategies to promote gender-equitable civic participation.
