Place: Sneden’s Landing, New York, about forty minutes from the city
Time: a night in May 1988
There will be a fifteen-minute intermission after Act I.
Director's Note:
Rumors was first performed in New York in 1988. Neil Simon, who will be remembered as the master of the clever dialogue farce, wrote about people he knew, and then produced it in front of those same people. These clever, articulate, well educated characters are desperately inventing lies and believing rumors about their own friends because they tend to value appearances over substance. By the end of the play they have learned that taking risks can be freeing, assuming the worst in others is toxic, and that perhaps they need to take another look at what is really important.
Maybe we can still learn these lessons; maybe not! But in the meantime we can laugh like crazy and enjoy the fact that we get to be together again, enjoying the communal experience that is theatre. Thank you for joining us and making it all possible.
