Show Synopsis:
Zap! is a collision of 7 genres of theatre, giving the audience, armed with remotes, the ability to "zap" each play and switch to another.
Here are the plays:
The English Mystery: An English countryside, Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery set during WWI.
The Comedy: A play of wisecracking, speedy banter, focusing on family foibles and modern life in NYC in the style of Neil Simon.
Shakespeare's Richard III: A play in the style of Shakespeare's...Richard III.
The Russian Play: A brooding drama set in the late 1800s featuring a once-proud family preoccupied with dreaming and scheming, inspired by the works of Chekhov.
The Performance Art Monologue: A performer who spits on the traditions of theatre without realizing she’s honoring its ageless themes.
The Avante-Garde Play: Nonsequitors, silences, eerie situations of maddening hopelessness that life no longer makes any sense, in the style of Waiting for Godot.
The Southern Play: Vanished fortunes, twisted families, and sensitive characters who take comfort in drinking and rage against the lack of culture in the countryside, in the tradition of Tennesee Williams.
Director's Note:
On CBS Sunday Morning, David Byrne of The Talking Heads fame spoke about the reopening of Broadway. He described the value of the “collective ritual,” the group social experience that is so important to us. Our most important moments take place in groups: weddings, sporting events, celebrations, worship. Byrne argues that this togetherness is “..essential to who we are as humans” and that performers “...act as a catalyst...that allows everyone to experience something, that allows them to transcend themselves for a moment.” So when you applaud tonight, include yourself in the cheers. You are a crucial part of live theatre and your presence is helping us all become more “completely human again.”
Thank you for supporting theatre. The discipline and creative problem solving skills that students learn in the arts provide them with abilities they will use the rest of their lives in many different careers. Your participation in this performance is an investment in our community and our future.
