For those of you who missed it or want to review it, here is the presentation give by KJHS Administration on 6th Grade Welcome Night.
Here is the 25-26 6th grade school supply list.

There are several sports that begin before the start of the 25-26 school year, including cheer, softball, baseball, and cross country. If your student is interested in any of these sports, please review the Unit 5 JH Athletics Fall Tryout Guide. Please note that all needed registration paperwork can be uploaded directly to the KJHS Athletics site when registering your student for sports tryouts. Please note that even if you upload your student's physical to the KJHS athletics site, you still need to turn a copy of the physical into the KJHS nurse.
Students will be placed in a 6th grade math course based on several data points including information about the students' performance and achievement in their fifth-grade math class, and on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness assessment and Star math assessment. Please review the Middle School Math Placement FAQ for more information.
Due to their detrimental impact on students' education and mental health, cell phones and wireless headphones/earbuds are not allowed to be used by students from 8:45 am to 3:45 pm. These devices should be "silent and away" during this time. If they are seen by staff, they will be confiscated and taken to the main office. Families wanting to get a hold of their student during the school day should contact the KJHS Main Office at (309) 557-4407. Students needing to get in contact with a family member should ask a staff member for assistance.
6th graders enjoy P.E. for a full 43-minute class period daily. We have two gyms along with outdoor space to provide ample opportunities for physical exercise.
What do students need for P.E.?
P.E. Uniform, deodorant, a lock, and athletic shoes
Students will need to change for P.E. The P.E. uniform is a pair of black shorts and gray T-shirt.
PE uniforms can be purchased online in August. Information regarding this will be sent out in the Back to School KJ Family Connection.
Students are welcome to bring their own black shorts and gray T-shirts.
Deodorant to be kept in P.E. locker
A lock for the P.E. locker. Dual locks can be purchased during our Open Doors days.
Students will need athletic shoes daily.
Knowing who to contact at KJHS about certain issues can be challenging. We hope this mini-guide helps as to who to contact first when you are needing assistance.

There are several medical state-mandated requirements that your child will need BEFORE beginning 6th grade, and they are outlined in the list below. Unit 5 has a 1st-day exclusion policy for physical exams and immunizations. This means your child’s new physical exam and all current immunizations must be on file at the school BEFORE they can start school on August 21, 2025.
6th Grade Requirements*:
School physical exam dated 8/15/24 or after (not a sports physical)
Tdap (after 10 or 11 years of age)
MCV ( after 11 years of age)
Hepatitis B (series of 3 shots, likely received as an infant)
Varicella (chicken pox series of 2 shots, likely already received)
Dental exam ( turned in before April 2026)
Children without physicals and immunizations will NOT be allowed to start school until their records have been reviewed. Please email the records to KJHS school nurse, Jennifer O'Brien, or drop-off records at the school on or before August 12, 2025. Even if you have uploaded a physical form to the athletics registration site, you must also submit one to the KJHS school nurse. All Unit 5 medical forms can be accessed here.
* If you have already completed these requirements for your child, thank you! Your child's health records will come from their elementary school nurse!
KJHS has a certified facility dog, Vinnie, who has been a member of our staff since 2022. The purpose of a facility dog is to support the needs of students throughout the school. Vinnie is a highly trained black labrador retriever who receives annual recertification through Assistance Dogs International (ADI). While at school, Vinnie is in working mode and is paired with his handler, Ms. Libernini, our school social worker. Any and all of Vinnie’s interactions with students will be done under her supervision.
KJHS Night at Busch Stadium (Cubs vs Cardinals) is on Saturday, August 9, at 6:15 pm. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased online through the KJHS Infinite Campus School Store. The KJHS PTO supports the staff and students at KJHS by providing morale boosting events as well as sponsoring innovative teaching initiatives. The PTO meets 5 times a year and there are multiple opportunities to be involved, all of which involve little time commitment. The PTO is currently looking for a treasurer for the 25-26 school year. If you are interested in serving in this position or being involved with the PTO in a different aspect, please contact KJHS PTO president, Kari Schick, at kjhspto@gmail.com.
