The Monastero degli Olivetani building complex is a 12th-century monastic structure located in the city of Lecce.
Towards the end of the 12th Century (most probably between 1171 and 1174), the Norman petty lord Tancred of Hauteville authorized the Benedictines black monks to build the monastery. In late 15th Century, another Benedictine order took possession of the building and started a structural renovation that culminated, during the following century, in the construction of the famous cloister with paired columns. Soon after, the cloister was enriched with a water well surrounded by four Solomonic columns bearing a Corinthian canopy. Two centuries later, the building façade as well as the monumental staircase were built.
During the 19th Century, the town administration acquired the building that was initially assigned to public offices and then designated as lodging for panhandlers.
In 1985, the building was finally acquired by the University of Lecce that started deep renovation works. The monastery became a cultural center in early 90s and nowadays it hosts the Department of History, Society and Human Studies of the University of Salento.
