Workshop Overview
The workshop features the participation of Luis Radford and Anna Sfard and is the culmination of a course of study began in March 2024, in which doctoral students and young researchers were engaged in the study of some papers suggested by the two researchers and takes place at the Department of Information and Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics at the University of Salerno, Campus Unisa in Fisciano.
This initiative aims to offer doctoral students, young researchers and a wider audience of Italian and foreign scholars the opportunity to attend a high-level scientific discussion between the two speakers and to interact with them in the last part of the workshop.
Luis Radford and Anna Sfard (Freudenthal Medals from the ICMI, International Commission for Mathematical Instruction of the International Mathematical Union, in 2011 and 2007, respectively) are recognized among the most prominent researchers in the field of Mathematics Education, particularly for contributions that outline new research perspectives of great interest for mathematics teaching-learning: the emancipatory potential of mathematics education on the cultural terrain (Radford) and the intertwining of language interaction and the development of students' mathematical knowledge (Sfard). Luis Radford has already collaborated in the training of Italian researchers by hosting some of them at his university; Anna Sfard is known in Italy for her book “Thinking as Communicating: Human Development, the Growth of Discourses, and Mathematizing” (Cambridge University Press), translated into Italian ("Psicologia del pensiero matematico. Il ruolo della comunicazione nello sviluppo cognitivo” Ed. Erickson). Both have already participated, as highly appreciated speakers, in numerous initiatives at Italian universities.
